Why Hungarian Goose Down?

Not all down is created equal. When it comes to bedding filling, goose down is considered the best fill product on the market. And, more specifically, Hungarian goose down provides an even more luxurious choice thanks to its exceptional thermal qualities and softness.

The special qualities of Hungarian goose down come from the breeding heritage of Hungarian geese and the country’s climate. Hungary is well-known for long, cold winters. Hungarian geese have adapted over the past 1,000-plus years to survive in the harshest weather conditions, meaning their feathers and down provide them with the insulation they need to survive. Thus, their down is highly desirable for its thermal qualities. Hungarian goose down has long been considered the most luxurious comforter and pillow filling in the world because of this, rewarding sleepers with a comfortable and restful nights’ sleep.

PureDelight or PureComfort?

The only difference between the comforters is that the PureDelight (Ultimate) is filled with white down whereas the PureComfort is filled with gray down.

Down can vary in color, from white to gray depending on the breed of the bird and the season in which it was harvested. The color of down does not affect its thermal characteristics – a gray down will insulate just as well as a white down of the same size cluster and maturity. Even the cover material is the same: close weave 100% sateen cotton. They are both super lightweight, and cloudlike. You will love either one you choose.

Great choice for allergy sufferers

Despite what is generally believed, this down bedding is a perfect choice for allergy sufferers. Since it's washed in naturally warm spring water, fewer chemicals are used. It is also considered super-clean and hypoallergenic due to excellent oxygen and turbidity ratings. What's more, this comforter is cased in Nomite certified fabric, ideal for sleepers that suffer from a house dust mite allergy. All Hamvay-Láng beddings are also OEKO-TEX certified which means they are manufactured without the use of harmful substances and chemicals.

What is Fill Power?

Fill power tells you about the fullness of the down in your comforter. Down with a high fill power is more lofty, more insulative and recovers its fullness more easily. Good quality down has a higher fill power rating (650-900) and lasts longer. Shake out your comforter every morning to help revive those precious down clusters and keep them working hard for you.

Which tog/warmth do I need?

Every bedroom is different and we know that as the temperature increases or decreases, you will want a comforter that keeps you at a comfortable temperature to ensure you get the best night's sleep. A tog is a measurement of insulation. The higher the tog, the warmer the comforter. We offer low tog comforters, which are ideal for warm weather and higher tog comforters that will keep you warm during chilly winter nights.

When those warm summer nights come around, stay cool with our summer comforters (4.5 tog). During those transitional seasons of spring and autumn, you'll want a comforter that is mid-weight (10.5 tog). When those winter winds blow through and the temperature gets cold, our winter comforters (13.5 tog) will make sure you stay nice and warm when you're snuggled up in bed.

Caring for your down bedding

Protecting Your Comforter and Pillow

First and foremost, the best thing you can do to care for your goose down comforter and pillow is to get a quality cover to protect it. A duvet cover is a must when it comes to protecting your comforter, as it will help keep it clean and protected from dirt, dust, and body oils. Likewise, a quality pillow cover can help keep your pillow protected from the same dirt, dust, and body oils that can soil it. If your bedding is well protected with a quality cover, washing is only necessary every few years.

Shake and air out

If your bedding needs to be freshened up, you can take off the duvet cover or pillowcase and shake it out weekly, or hang it on a line for a while to air out.

Washing Your Bedding

If an accident happens and you get a spill on your bedding, you can spot clean the spill with a gentle detergent or cleanser and a small amount of water. If you feel you need to wash your comforter or pillow, do not dry clean it. Dry cleaning is too harsh and abrasive for the delicate down. Instead, you should wash it in a large capacity washer that does not have an agitator. When washing your bedding, it is important to wash it in lukewarm water with a gentle detergent. After the washing process is complete, you should take it out of the washer and gently squeeze any excess water out of your bedding. You can line dry it or put it in a large capacity dryer, taking care that you put it on the lowest setting. It can take a while for your comforter or pillow to dry on a low setting, so you may add some clean towels to the load to help soak up additional moisture as well. Never spin-dry your goose down bedding. We always recommend to rather take your down bedding to your local cleaners and let them know that you are looking to get it professionally laundered, not dry cleaned.

Storing Your Bedding

Store your off-season comforter in a breathable storage bagIf you need to store your goose down bedding at any time, make sure it is in a well-ventilated area and that it is put in storage while completely dry to avoid mildew. Be sure your pillow or comforter is not compressed, which will damage the down’s loftiness and integrity.

With the appropriate care outlined above, you can enjoy your investment in high-quality goose down bedding for years to come.
